Do's and Don'ts of Disinfecting

In today's post, we will be going over some ways to step up your disinfecting game. We all know how important it is to disinfect high contact areas in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. But are you getting the most out of your disinfectant? Or are you potentially putting yourself or family at risk?

To start with, it is important to read your labels carefully. Look for disinfectant that is EPA registered. As a bonus tip, also keep an eye out for products with an alcohol content of 60% or higher. If you don't have a product on hand, Bleach is also an extremely effective disinfectant. The CDC recommends 1/3 cup of bleach per 1 gallon of water when using as a disinfectant.

Now that you have your product, thoroughly clean the surface you plan to disinfect. Take the time to remove any caked on dirt or any other major contamination. This is a hugely important step. Disinfectant kills what you CAN'T see. If you can see it, go ahead and take care of it.

Lastly, if your chosen product has special timing instructions, follow them carefully. But a good rule of thumb is to wait at least 30 seconds after you apply your disinfectant, before wiping it off. This gives it time to completely kill any potential germs or viruses.

DISCLAIMER: When using bleach, never mix it with ammonia or any cleaning product containing ammonia. This creates chlorine gas which can be deadly.
